Experience

Summer of 2016

BASF - Florham Park, NJ

Financial Analyst Intern

BASF SE is the largest chemical producer in the world. I worked at the North American headquarters of BASF Corporation, the largest affiliate of BASF SE and the second largest producer of chemicals in North America.

As a Financial Analyst intern, I worked with the Plastic Additives division (think: what goes into paints and plastic products) to help identify cost saving measures.

  • I led a global initiative to rectify misallocated costs in multiple business units, saving those business units approximately $80,000 annually
  • I identified imported products eligible for new tariff reductions passed by Congress with savings of $6M annually

Spring of 2017

SpaceX - Hawthorne, CA

Biz Ops and Purchasing Intern

SpaceX (Space Exploration Technologies) is a private aerospace company founded by Elon Musk that provides launch vehicles for commercial and government spacecraft and satellites with the eventual goal of forming a human colony on Mars.

My time at SpaceX was highlighted by some amazing achievements, including the launch of the first reflight of an orbital class rocket (SES-10). Back on Earth, I found myself involved in almost every facet of the business: First Stage recovery operations, launch pad restoration, construction, maintenance, food services, and InfoSec

  • I saved c. $500k annually through negotiating RFP’s with vendors across multiple industries
  • I was responsible for initial due diligence of The Boring Company activities

Invoice Tracking Case Study

Halfway through my internship, I was given an "intern task". Look through the pile of late invoices, confirm with the orderer that they received the package, report back to Accounts Payable so that they can pay out the invoice.

The only problem was that there were hundreds of overdue invoices, sometimes being months overdue. To the point where suppliers were threatening to sue! Going through my exercise would do nothing to solve the issue. It would just put a band aid on it until it got overwhelming again.

What Did I Do About It?
  1. Identify why we had hundreds of packages that were not being marked as received - It turns out that certain locations did not have proper package receiving protocols set up. Lots of boxes were coming in and going straight to the orderer without ever being marked as received.
  2. Convince those in charge that this was a problem worth being addressed - Once I established how bad the problem was and what seemed to be the root cause, I got the head of Receiving, Accounts Payables, and Purchasing in a room and presented the issue, gaining their support in finding a solution.
  3. Next I made friends with the boots on the ground in the local receiving dock - By understanding: what their process was, the struggles they faced, and informing them what happened up stream when the process broke down, we were better able to reinforce proper receiving procedures.
  4. Finally I wanted to develop a way for management to track how each receiving center was doing in regards to tagging packages as received - I built a dashboard using Excel and SQL that tracked how many packages were associated with late invoices, and traced them back to what receiving center they came in to.

By the time my internship was over, we were able to clear the mass of late invoices. Tracking received packages became a joint effort across multiple business units, and my tracking tool was adopted to help prevent delinquent payments to suppliers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's your favorite ice cream flavor?

It's mint chocolate chip and no I'm not ashamed to admit it

What are some current challenges you'd like to tackle?

I think it would be interesting to look at and adjust institutionalized processes that are not aligned with optimal outcomes (either purposely or accidentally). The issues pointed out in Nudge are a great starting place, and I think that as a society we can alleviate some of the mental strain that goes into complicated decisions.

What are some future challenges you'd like to tackle?

There's not enough time in a life to make a dent in all the possible things that will come up over the next 50 years. I don't believe that true AI and space travel are going to be truly relevant during my lifetime. Advancements in programmed robotics will likely be the most interesting and impactful. The rise of droids to the point where we can have cheap, reliable, unmanned labor that can work anywhere at any time will be truly revolutionary for the world. And I think it's closer than we think...

Are the Jets terrible?

Yes.
